How can we teach kids to sound out words?
I shared a variety of ways in my first post about word slider cards. You can see it here. After kids have a beginning understanding of what it means to “sound it out,” slider cards are a great way to help things come together.
The idea is very simple. You can use index cards or long strips of paper to write simple words to sound out. It helps to include a picture of the word at the end of the strip for self-checking.
Next, seal a business sized envelope.
Cut off the end of the envelope.
Insert a card into the envelope. Have your child say each sound as each letter or letter combination is revealed.

Hi Anna,
I love the sliders, and want to do them with my kindergarten son. When I click on the short i link though, it goes straight to short u. So I have downloaded the sliders for short a, o, and u. Do you have a working link for short i? Also, did you ever create sliders for short e?

I have been a reading specialist for years and I rarely find a good new idea. I love the slider cards and I want to thank you for sharing. These will work on whatever sound your child or student is having a hard time learning. There are some children who grab hold of sounds very easily, and then there are others that need that extra help. Thank you again for your site.
