What writing skills do our youngest writers need to know?
If you teach writing to kindergarten, first, or second graders, you know how difficult it can be to know exactly what to teach.
In fact, many readers have asked me for a complete scope and sequence.
This video will help you out!
Watch it for an overview of what K-2 writers need to learn with respect to
- engagement
- composing with pictures
- finding ideas
- word choice
- using details
- focus & organization
- the writing process
- conventions
- spelling
We hope this video was helpful, and we look forward to sharing the full course this fall!

Hi Anna, thanks for sneak peek. I am parent of 2 nd grader and English is my second language, I have so hard time teaching writing to my son. Please can you advice how do I teach my son writing because he reading level is L which is benchmark of 3 grader.
Anna G
Hi Rinzin! My best advice is in this 10-part video series. I would watch all the parts and then follow up with the questions you still have. 🙂
Melanie Fudge
where do you get the 10 part video series?
Anna Geiger
These aren’t easily accessible right now because I no longer recommend much of this approach to teaching writing (see disclaimer at the top of this post). I hope to be able to spend a lot of time studying the research in 2024, and hopefully I’ll have a new series eventually!
Kathy
well, just not “my day” ……. #8 didn’t submit or download … so I tried #1 ….. failed that one too. Is there a full moon tonite?
Mabel Enaholo
Really helpful. Thank you.

I am so glad and grateful for the 12 weeks of vlogs and resources because I can get started when we start back to school on August 12th. When I taught middle school, writing was my forte, but as a first grade teacher, I have not figured it out in 12 years! ? So, I am very excited and thankful to have your excellent step by step guidance and resources to depend on. THIS year, the hallway cork strip outside MY classroom will be worth a visit. I’ll have to set up a wee coffee shop there. ?
Yippee! Can’t wait!
Anna G
Yay!! It’s going to be fantastic, Barbara! We hope you’re able to join us for the full course – it will have everything you need!

Thank you for this sneak peek! I responded to your survey last spring, and have been anxious to see your follow-up plans. I am currently working my way through Teach Every Reader, and it’s truly been the best practical learning I have ever experienced! With all that I am learning, I feel well-equipped to completely revamp my reading instruction this fall. I fully expect the same will happen when I take this upcoming course! Thank you for all of your hard work.
Anna G
This is so wonderful to hear, Dani! :)) We can’t wait to share our second course!
