Grab some printable word family houses!

Printable Word Family Houses
Recently I posted about the importance of learning to read with word families (see the beginning of this post). Today I’m sharing these printable word family houses that I use with my 4 1/2 year old. I find that while he’s resistant to flash cards, he likes to do these hands-on reading activities. These would work well for preschoolers up through first grade.Here’s how to assemble them:
1) Print the document on brightly colored cardstock. Here’s what a sample download will look like:
2. Cut out the house and wheel. Make sure to cut into the house and snip out the window, too.
3. Laminate both pieces. I love this affordable home laminator. If you’ve cut out the window before laminating, you will have a nice clear window. This is what you will have:
4. Attach the pieces together with a brass fastener. Here are our finished houses:

We highly recommend this reading curriculum for learning short vowel words – it’s fantastic!

Thanks for all your materials! I started my daughter out on a very established PK curriculum and she hated it. I found your site and started using your printables as well as Reading the Alphabet. She loves doing school now! I am currently using these houses with both my kids. My son is in 1st grade and this is a great review for him. My daughter is in PK and these are great for her just starting to read. Sure wish you would make them for the other vowels! For some reason this is much more like a game than the other activities, so they are much more interested in doing them.

I just want to say I love your page, I love everything about it!! My son has a learning difficulties where he finds it harder to learn as fast as others. So I have been freaking out because he is due to start Kindergarten next year and I have done all I thought I could with counting, maths, tracing sheets and ABC charts. But seeing your page with the versatility of educational print outs and not only making it educational but interesting and fun for him to learn has changed me. I have only been doing your activities with him for the past two weeks and have seen so much improvement, a lot more than he has in the last year with my activities. I’m so glad I found your page!! I’m so impressed with this site. I found it for the first time at 1 am today. I’ve printed out family word uno and the AB word family house. I’m a grandma raising 2 grandchildren ages 4 and 6 and it’s hard to remember tricks I used so many years ago. I’m loving how you make learning fun. I’m glad you can use these, Viki! As for other vowels, I will be developing those in the future, but they are not on my immediate “to do” list. I would expect them within the coming year, but that doesn’t help you much, does it? 🙁 One thing you might do is look at Teachers Pay Teachers online and search for “word families.” You can also search “word families” on Pinterest. I have a Word Families Pinterest board which might get you started in the right direction: http://pinterest.com/themeasuredmom/word-families/ There are a number ideas there of simple games you can make yourself. Hope that helps!
