I’m sharing yet another free printable for practice reading i-e words!
These four-in-a-row reading games take the boring out of reading practice. Plus, they’re quick to print and play!
Print the game you’d like to play. I include four in the download:
- CVCe (i-e) words, such as ride and time
- CCVCe (blend or digraph + consonant + silent e) words, such as smile or write.
- Short i words, such as tip and sit, PLUS CVCe words
- Short i words beginning with a blend or digraph, such as grin and twig, PLUS CCVCe words
*You may think that adding in those short vowel words make a game easier, but it actually makes them harder. You child can’t automatically assume a word has the long i sound, so he really has to think about the spelling pattern before reading a word.
Even after a morning at kindergarten, my Five needs no coaxing to play Four in a Row. We take turns reading a word and dotting it with a Do-a-Dot marker. It’s a race to see who gets four in a row first!
Sometimes we see who gets four in a row, and then we just take turns reading and dotting the remaining words. Other times we don’t play four in a row at all. We just read and dot. My Five likes to see how fast he can read!
We can play all four games in about ten minutes. I love these jam-packed reading sessions! They give just enough time for reading practice without keeping my Five away from his Legos for too long. ;).
Enjoy!
