IMPORTANT UPDATE (Fall 2022): As I learn more about the science of reading and writing, I have come to the conclusion that writing workshop does not typically include enough direct, explicit instruction. I am spending the next year researching this topic and will update my resources accordingly. Please know that this post was written before I came to this understanding.

Wow, we’ve covered a lot in this free video series!

  • We’ve talked about what to teach writers in K-2.
  • We’ve discussed how to get kids actually interested in writing.
  • We gave tips for getting your writing workshop started.
  • We’ve shown you how to help kids move from drawing to writing.
  • We’ve explained the secret to meeting every writer’s needs.
  • We discussed how to teach young writers to spell on their own.
  • We gave tips for managing writing workshop.
  • We shared a list of mentor texts perfect for K-2.

We’re on the home stretch!

Today, it’s all about revising and editing. Is it really possible to teach these skills in K-2?

    Hi,
Thank you so much for this series. I can very much relate to having students say “I hate writing! Do we HAVE to write today?”
I tutor kids after school one on one. How can I do the “sharing” part of the writing workshop?
    Thanks,
    Esther

Thank you! Writing is my “scary zone” so this series has been very helpful. I already use so many of your resources. Going from 5th to Kinder has been a daunting task, but very enjoyable!
