If you’re looking for a literacy activity to use with your garden theme, our free pocket chart sentences are for you!
Enjoy these printable sentences to use with your garden theme!
To do the activity, simply print the pocket chart sentences from the download at the end of this post. I like to use this cardstock rather than plain paper.
Then pull out your pocket chart (we love this one).
When we’re ready to get started, I like to put all the plain words in one pile (pictured above) and all the words with images in another pile.
Here’s how the activity sounded:
“We’re going to build sentences about the garden. Each sentence will say something like this ‘This potato is from my garden.’ You can choose the vegetable for each sentence. Let’s get started! Where is this?”
“I don’t know what it starts with.”
“Remember our song from the CD in the car? ‘T-h, t-h, goes, /th/, /th/. You put your tongue between your teeth and blow. Th, th, goes, /th/, /th/.’ Find the word that starts with the letters ‘th.'”
“Here it is!”
“Great! Put it up on the highest row you can reach. Now choose a vegetable.”
“I want to do radish.”
“This radish IS… can you find is?”
“Here it is.”
“Great job! You found that one fast. This radish is FROM… where is from?”
“/f/, /f/, from. This is from.”
“Good work using that beginning sound. Next we need the word my. This radish is from MY.”
“This word says my.”
“Last word – garden!”
“/g/, /g/, garden. This says garden.”
“Way to go! Now use this pointer to ‘read’ your sentence back to me.”
We kept building sentences until my Four was ready to be finished.
My preschooler isn’t reading much yet, as he lacks a solid phonics foundation.
But our focus with this activity was to develop his pre-reading skills … distinguishing between letters, words, and sentences; putting a space between words; and reading from left to right.
Goal accomplished!

I would like to know if you have more of the pocket chart sentences in different subjects. I would be interested in purchasing them

Hi Diane!
Right now I have a few freebies that are taken from my theme packs. Each theme pack has a LOT of pocket chart sentences, but they are not available for purchase separate from the theme packs. If you scroll down on my Free Printables page (from the menu bar) you’ll see the freebies. If you click on “Themes” from the menu bar you’ll see an overview of each theme.

Thank you so much. I love your stuff and have implemented many of them in my classroom.
