Over the past year I’ve been sharing short vowel word family houses — now you can get them all in one place. It’s a GIANT set of 34 free short vowel word family houses!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know all about our word family houses. I’ve been using them to teach my Four (now my Five) to learn to read. We began doing these when he first showed the ability to blend sounds together. Now he zips through these short vowel houses with hardly any effort and reads most short vowel words automatically.
They’re perfect for using at home or in a classroom learning center!
The best part? (Besides the fact that they’re free, of course!) They’re easy to put together.
1. Print on brightly colored cardstock.
2. Cut them out. Be sure to snip into the house for the window.
3. Laminate. If you’re a teacher, you probably have access to a giant laminator at your school. But for those of us at home, this Scotch Thermal Laminator is awesome (and affordable!).
4. Assemble. Just poke a hole for the brass fastener (use a tiny screwdriver or scrapbooking tool), put the pieces together, and you’re done!
Since these can just be printed on plain paper and photocopied onto cardstock, the temptation is to give the hard copy to your fellow teachers or friends.
Please don’t do that.

Hi there! Love your website and use many, many of your printables and ideas at home with my kindergartener and preschooler. Thank you so, so much for providing these and all your hard work free to us stay at home moms. These word family houses are great and I think my daughter will love them, however, I was wondering if you have a way to send me a blank template of the houses and circle spinner so that I can laminate and just write whichever family we are working on at the time so that I can just print, cut and laminate just one house and use it over and over.

Thanks SO much for these! I was considering making something similar and decided to google search it and came upon your site! My 4 year old is pretty stubborn and although smart, he’s hard to teach because he wants to be so independent. I have been trying to teach him to read, and it always ends in frustration (on both ends). I printed out one of these and it was like magic. He loved it, and was so proud of himself.
