Today I’m adding another dot sticker page to our collection – B is for butterfly! I’m also sharing tips for how to use these pages with a 2 1/2 year old.

B is for Butterfly – free printable

I’ve been sharing our dot sticker pages as I create them.  I’ve chosen to teach the alphabet out of order.  Letter B is toward the end of our list, because it’s one of the tougher letters to write.  You can learn more about how I teach the alphabet in this post.

As my preschoolers get close to finishing the alphabet, my Two is starting to participate in our activities.

These simple dot sticker pages are great for kids who enjoy stickers and a little seat work.  My Four is no longer interested, but my Two loves them.

How to use these with a 2 1/2 year old

• First of all, ask first.  “Do you want to do a page with stickers?”  If your child is not interested, no problem!   You can find many playful ways to introduce letters on my Alphabet for Kids Pinterest board.

• Provide colorful round stickers or other round objects to cover the circles.  When we use our dot stickers, I peel off the border around the circles so that the dots are easier to peel off.  You can also try round magnets, pom poms, or other small round objects.  Just be cautious if your toddler still puts things in his mouth.  Mine doesn’t.

• Talk about the letter as your child works on the page.  “This is a letter B.  /b/, /b/, butterfly.  Can you say “B”?  Where is the letter B?”   This will depend on your child, but my little guy only knows a handful of letters.  I talk about the letters casually and in slightly structured activities like this.  But I don’t drill him on it.  This is just a fun introduction.

• Be content with however much of the page your child wants to complete, and the manner in which he completes it.  While older children might start in the corner of the B and methodically fill the circles all around, my Two puts a circle in the B, then the butterfly, and back again.  And this time he only did about 10 circles before he was “all done.”

• Point out the letter when you see it in other places.  When reading a book from our letter B book list, the word “BOOM!” was in big letters on a page.  I asked my Two to point to the “B.”  He didn’t get it the first time, but he might the next!  Keep it fun and low key.  Those letters will come!
