These are our favorite all about me books – perfect for helping children celebrate the unique people that they are!
I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont
A vibrant little girl likes herself no matter where she goes, what she does, how she looks, or what others think of her. “Because I’m ME!” We love the bouncy rhymes in this book, but the pictures really steal the show.
I Can Be Anything, by Jerry Spinelli
Rather than talk about real careers kids have when they grow up, it celebrates what kids can do now. “Paper plane folder, puppy dog holder, apple chomper, puddle stomper.” It’s a sweet, quick read.
Marvelous Me, by Lisa Bullard
This book is about appreciating what makes oneself unique, but the audience is a little unclear – especially when it is revealed at the end that Alex has an identical twin. It’s an okay book, but not one my kids connected to.
Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes
This book addresses the cruelty of other kids when Chrysanthemum is teased for her very long name. The mouse is continually discouraged until she has a new music teacher who also has a very long name and even names her baby Chrysanthemum. After reading, it would be good to talk about why our self worth shouldn’t depend on what other people think of us, as little Chrysanthemum is far too concerned about her peers’ opinion.
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, by Patty Lovell
Unlike Chrysanthemum, tiny and odd Molly Lou Melon is secure in herself, no matter what others think of her. When the perpetual bully keeps teasing her, she continues to be herself. A bonus is that the two of them become friends at the end of the book.
All By Myself, by Mercer Mayer
Originally published in 1983, this classic Little Critter book hasn’t lost a bit of its charm. On each page, we see Little Critter do things all by himself – even if he ties his shoelaces together spills the orange juice, or helps ice a cake by licking the spoon. A favorite!
I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson
Here’s another classic all about me book (1988). I’ve always loved Nancy Carlson’s illustrations, and this book about an exuberant pig is no exception. This pig knows how to take care of herself and how to have fun even when no one else is around. I like the message that we can have fun and enjoy life even when we’re alone.
ABC I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson
Our confident pig returns in this fun journey through the alphabet with a group of animal friends. The pictures are just as endearing, and the book is a quick, fun read.
Incredible Me! by Kathi Appelt
This is a sweet, simple story about loving yourself. I admit it felt a little over the top to me: “I’m the cat’s meow, I’m the dog’s top flea… I’m the cream in the butter, I’m the salt in the sea…” But it’s cute.
We’re Different, We’re the Same, by Bobbi Jane Kates
I almost never recommend books based on television shows, but we really liked this creative book featuring the characters from Sesame Street. On one page we learn that we all have different noses, for example. But on the next page we see that we all use our noses for the same things – so we’re all the same. My boys really loved this one!
