7 Letter Y Crafts and Process Art for Preschoolers

Y is for Yellow

My Three had fun finding miscellaneous craft items to glue to his yellow Y. He’s known his colors for quite some time, but it was good to keep talking about the word yellow and the sound we hear at the beginning of it. Y’s sound is a hard one to master because you don’t hear the sound /y/ in the name of the letter. (Don’t be surprised if your little one says that y makes the /w/ sound!)

Yarn Block Prints

I saw this idea over at Print & Pattern and knew it would be perfect for letter Y. My husband cut some blocks of wood for us, and I wrapped a piece of yarn around each block, sealing the end with a hot glue gun. My kids each had fun dipping the block into paint and making these beautiful prints.

Y is for Yak

My two preschool boys enjoyed making this simple Y is for Yak craft that I shared over at Crystal & Company. Hop over there to get the tutorial and patterns! You can see that my Three is still learning to draw a smile. 🙂

Yarn Weaving

My Three surprised me by doing a great job at this yarn weaving project from Preschool Alphabet (head over there for the tutorial!). We worked together on the project, and I was careful to help him with the ribbon so he didn’t get frustrated. When we were finished I glued down and trimmed the ends. He was so proud of this!

Yarn Prints 

We found these mirror image string prints at The Artful Parent. At first the kids just set the yarn on one side of the card – but when we sealed and opened them again we just saw messy blobs. My Five discovered that it was best to arrange the yarn before closing the paper. And as I’m writing this he’s saying over my shoulder, “Why is that butterfly upside down?” Whoops.

Y is for Yo-Yo

My Three loved decorating the circle with Do-a-Dot markers and gluing it with a piece of yarn to make a yo-yo.

Yarn Painting

My Five made this yarn painting, another idea I found at The Artful Parent. This was a two-step project that involved glue-soaked yarn, a day to dry, and glitter tempera paint – but any kind of paint will do. He was very proud of how it turned out!
